RI District 2982 was born on 1 July 2015. It is the offspring of  the erstwhile RID 2980. As of 1 July 2016 the District has 63 clubs and 2734 members . The District encompasses five revenue districts of Tamilnadu state, namely Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Villupuram. RID 2982 is mostly a rural District with Salem as the only major city. Though one of the largest dams of India is in this District, most of the lands are rain-fed. Whereas textile is the major Industry in Salem and Namakkal districts, Villupuram and parts of Dharmapuri districts are dependent on agriculture. Namakkal is known for its , Poultry farming, Lorry transport and Lorry body-building. Tiruchengode is the Bore-well rig capital of India. Hosur, one of the largest industrial clusters in  Tamilnadu, is in the Krishnagiri district. Large Industrial houses like Leyland, TVS, Titan have their manufacturing facilities in Hosur. Most of the clubs in the District are in rural places. The oldest Club in the District is Rotary Club of Salem which was charted on 11 April 1939. The Clubs in the District mainly concentrate on Literacy Projects helping the improvement of the Free Schools run or aided by the Government where the children of the poor parents study. Every club is unique in its services. They involve themselves in addressing the needs of their local community. They also participate in Global Projects initiated by the District apart from participating in Global Grant projects. During 2015-16 the District project -HOPE- was initiated to provide 543 artificial limbs to war affected people of northern part of Sri Lanka and successfully accomplished it. Manufacturing and repairing centres for artificial limbs are being established in Sri Lanka. Though small in size and being rural, the District is vibrant and responsive to its local community needs and the needs of communities in other countries. The District has Rotaract 43 clubs, 124 Interact Clubs and 39 RCCs.
